Sarah Murdoch - NBCF
Patron BREAST CANCER RESEARCH SET TO BENEFIT FROM NEW LEADERSHIP

The National Breast Cancer Foundation, one of Australia's most highly recognised and successful charities is looking for a new Chief Executive Officer.

After a decade at the helm of the National Breast Cancer Foundation the current CEO, Sue Murray, has decided to step down. Under Sue's leadership the NBCF has grown tremendously in its fundraising capacity, profile and its influence on Australian breast cancer research.

There have been many highlights during Sue’s time with the NBCF:
• Sarah Murdoch became our Patron and in 2011 she celebrates her tenth year in the role.
• We launched the Pink Ribbon magazine, giving rise to a dramatic increase in cause-related marketing in the not-for profit sector. Many other organizations in the sector have now replicated this successful model.
• We published Australia's first-ever National Action Plan for Breast Cancer Research and Funding, laying the foundation for the future of research- driving innovation and collaboration and building Australia’s research capability.
• We re-invented Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, attracting a new generation of supporters and providing vital funding for young women affected by breast cancer.
• We established relationships with many of Australia's blue chip companies, resulting in millions of dollars being channeled into research.
• And above all, we continue to work with hundreds of inspirational breast cancer survivors and their families who share their stories to promote the NBCF’s work to the wider community.
However, no matter what new initiatives arise, and even with the best will in the world, an idea will remain an idea without the skills, talent and dedication of the staff and volunteers who bring the ideas to reality.

Sue is extremely proud of the organisation and its people and leaves the business in an impressive state, poised for its next phase of growth.

We have a wonderful template to work with and we all look forward to seeing breast cancer research flourish under the guidance of the new CEO.

Sue will remain with the NBCF until the new CEO is appointed and settled into the organisation.

RESEARCH NEWS

Researchers at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute have discovered that breast stem cells are exquisitely sensitive to the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone, a finding that opens the way for the development of new preventions and treatments for breast cancer.

The discovery, by scientists in the institute’s Stem Cells and Cancer and Bioinformatics divisions and co-funded by NBCF, also explains decades of evidence linking breast cancer risk to exposure to female hormones.
