Sandy, Sue & Will Join Team NBCF for City2Surf to Leave a Family LegacyJuly 4th, 2017
Devastated after seeing their two sisters Cath and Jen diagnosed with breast cancer just weeks apart, Susan, Sandy and Will felt compelled to join Team NBCF at the 2015 City2Surf to raise funds dedicated to breast cancer research.
“We have a strong family history of breast cancer but we were devastated that it could strike both our sisters within such a short period, “ explained Susan.
Sadly, Cath passed away 13 months after her diagnosis prior to the siblings completing their first City2Surf in 2015.
“I remember a conversation with Cath when she was urging us to undergo hereditary screening and she very clearly said that this stops here with me. It seemed only natural to honour her memory by raising money for research in the hope that one day there will be zero deaths from breast cancer,” recalled Sandy.
In 2016 the siblings ran City2Surf for Team NBCF again and their sister Jen, who was going through treatment at the time, cheered them on at the finish line.
To date the trio have raised over $14,000 for NBCF and they hope to raise a further $5,000 from the 2017 event, with Will’s wife Jodie also joining Team NBCF and fundraising. Overall, NBCF has a goal of raising $165,000 for this year’s City2Surf which will make a big difference to breast cancer research to benefit those affected by the disease.
“Last year I was overwhelmed by the support I got, not only from my family and friends but from people I had never met. Losing another sister to breast cancer is not an option. I am running in memory of Cathryn and with hope in my heart for Jen.” continued Susan.
“With our strong genetic history, the money we raise could well save our own lives one day as well as that of the many women in our family,” added Sandy.
