What Will You Tri For? Fiona Tri’s For Her Mum.

Fiona Blakeley - community news storyNational Breast Cancer Foundation is one of the official charity partners for Australia’s most-loved sporting event – the Noosa Triathlon. Every year a team of dedicated fundraisers take on the Tri as part of Team NBCF in support of life-changing breast cancer research, with an individual fundraising goal of $1,500.

In 2016, Fiona Blakeley was one of these people.

“Almost three years ago my amazing mum lost her courageous thirty three year battle with breast cancer.” says Fiona. “She was my age when she was first diagnosed; just forty four years old. Her brother, my Uncle, had also had breast cancer and my sister and I had both been assessed as high risk.”

When Fiona saw that Team NBCF was looking for people wanting to take on a challenge and fundraise, she knew she needed to get involved.

“18 months ago I set myself a personal challenge to one day complete a triathlon in honour of my mum. This year I reached a major milestone by completing the Sprint distance at Port Stephens which led me to feel strong enough to aim for the full Olympic distance at Noosa.”

As a regular giver to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Fiona says she recognised the important role that research played in prolonging her mother’s life.

“It was research that kept my mum alive for so long. I can’t think of a better way to do it than in pink and raising money for a cause I care so deeply about.”
