Yvonne, VIC – An Amazing Legacy She Left For Us All

May 8th, 2014

My mum Dianne was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 at the age of 77. It was discovered that her cancer had spread to her bones, and over the following 12 months had spread to other parts of her body.

She went through chemotherapy and some radiation. However, her battle was too great in the end. Even so, she continued to fight this. She was such an inspiration to us all; always being so positive and so courageous and never complained.

She was mother of seven children, grandmother of 18 grandchildren and now great grandmother of eight great grandchildren with another on the way. She adored her family and fought so hard to stay with us.

I was able to put a book together with my mum just weeks before she died. It is a book of her poems that she wrote over the years, most of which are about her loving husband Lindsay and our childhood. What an amazing legacy she has left for all of us.

My dad passed away in 1994. I am forever grateful to her for giving me this special and precious time together. I read the book to her from beginning to end. Two days after I read her the final poem, she passed away.

I made a promise to her that I would pursue her dream of having this book of poems published. This has now been accomplished with the generous support of McArthur, with all proceeds going to breast cancer research. This book is called ‘A Mothers Story In Poetry’ which will be available for sale at this stage on the day of the Mother’s Day Classic in Melbourne.

She is so greatly missed by us all.
