HARNESSING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM TO DEVELOP NEW TREATMENT OPTIONS

Photo of AProf Tatyana Chtanova

Your incredible support enables researchers funded by National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) like Associate Professor Tatyana Chtanova to develop new treatments for breast cancer.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer with limited treatment options due to the lack of hormone receptors.

The focus of this project is to develop an alternative immunotherapeutic approach by targeting the innate immune system, a part of the immune system that rapidly responds to bacterial infection. Associate Professor Chtanova has discovered that specialised white blood cells present in breast tumours can be re-programmed as anti-tumour fighting cells. The development of new immunotherapies with improved responses in breast cancer will be a significant advancement and result in improved outcomes for breast cancer patients.

In a previous study, Associate Professor Chtanova and her team were able to show that this approach can slow tumour growth and improve survival rates in preclinical models.

If successful, this project will provide the pre-clinical data necessary to develop new treatments for people with breast cancer including TNBC, most of whom do not currently benefit from existing immunotherapies.

This project and the many more funded by NBCF would not be possible without your generous support. Thank you for helping us move closer to our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

CIRCLE OF GIVING UPDATE

The NBCF Circle of Giving brings together groups of like-minded, powerful women who want to make a difference to breast cancer outcomes and help us reach our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer. Since 2015, the Circle of Giving nationally has raised $1.8 million and supported eight esteemed researchers over ten projects.

Each Circle chapter chooses a research project to support from a shortlist of brilliant NBCF-funded researchers. Support by this powerful group is a testament to the critical and ground-breaking research undertaken by some of the world’s best breast cancer researchers.

In October, the Sydney and Melbourne Circle of Giving groups gathered to hear the results of their votes for their next alignments with an NBCF-backed research project. Presented by NBCF Chair Adjunct Professor Helen Zorbas AO, NBCF CEO Associate Professor Cleola Anderiesz and Executive Director of Research, Dr Julie Ince-Demetriou, the members were delighted to learn the outcomes:

SYDNEY - continued backing of Associated Professor Clare Stirzaker from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research with her latest project: Innovative epigenetic therapy for optimising triple negative breast cancer outcomes. Congratulations Associate Professor Clare Stirzaker on the prestigious announcement for the Sydney Circle of Giving.

MELBOURNE - continued backing of Dr Clare Slaney from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre with her latest project: Using COVID-19 immunity to fight breast cancer. Congratulations Dr Clare Slaney on the prestigious announcement for the Melbourne Circle of Giving.
