Shining a Light on Diane's Journey

DIANE 13 OCT

On October 13th, we commemorate Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, a special occasion dedicated to shedding light on the challenges faced by individuals battling stage 4 breast cancer, like Diane. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the relentless nature of this disease.

Diane's initial diagnosis of breast cancer in 2018 set her on a tumultuous path. Despite her family history, she tested negative for BRCA 1 & 2 genes. Shortly after diagnosis, metastasis was discovered in her lungs, catapulting her into a more complex treatment journey. Chemotherapy, mastectomy, and radiotherapy became part of her daily life, followed by a continued regimen of medication and injections, yielding hopeful results as the lung nodules receded.

“WOW! When I look back at this image (image on the left), I feel like I have come a long way. I never thought I would be here almost 4 years on from a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis but thankfully, I am. There is no cure for my diagnosis, and I will continue with treatment for the remainder of my life although treatment options are limited. That is why funding breast cancer research for metastatic disease is absolutely crucial.” Diane, NBCF Community Ambassador.

Metastatic breast cancer, with its capacity to spread to various organs, demands our unwavering attention. As we come together to observe this awareness day, we salute Diane for her incredible strength and resilience. Her journey stands as a living testament to the critical significance of ongoing breast cancer research, made possible by the generosity of donors, just like you. Thank you!

Honouring a Loved One’s Memory

Setting up a tribute page with the National Breast Cancer Foundation in honour of a loved one is a profound way to perpetuate their memory. Unlike flowers, which eventually wither away, donating towards world-class breast cancer research leaves a meaningful legacy. Peter created a tribute page in memory of his wife, Vanessa.

“Vanessa would have loved to know that her request to family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched, to donate funds to NBCF in lieu of sending flowers had resulted in more than $40,000 of funds dedicated to ongoing research to find better treatments, or dare I say a cure for this terrible disease.

In the darkest of times, my beautiful wife asked me to openly request that our family and friends not to send flowers that reminded us all of what was coming, and later what we had lost, but rather use those funds to assist in finding a way to battle, and hopefully defeat breast cancer.

The NBCF tribute page offered a most wonderful way to put Vanessa’s wishes in motion.

I now find myself reading, and re-reading all the beautiful words left as a tribute to Vanessa from those that made a donation.”
