TOWARDS
ZERO

BETTER RISK PREDICTION FOR BETTER PREVENTION

Prevention is vital to our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer. Our scientists couldn’t agree more, which is why they are finding ways to identify people with higher risks of developing breast cancer.

NBCF-funded researcher Professor Melissa Southey (pictured) at Monash University is never short of questions and is always looking for answers. And luckily, she has the patience and the drive to commit to finding them.

Her leadership of large collaborative projects has enabled internationally relevant questions to be answered fast. And her research into heritable risk factors involving families who have experienced multiple cases of cancer has laid the groundwork for best practice in managing people living with high cancer risk.

Much of her attention has always been on how to identify people at high risk of developing breast cancer – and the best way to prevent it.

Our knowledge of breast cancer risk factors has come a long way over the years but there are many heritable risk factors that are yet to be identified.

To achieve a new standard of care, Professor Southey aims to improve cancer risk assessments and treatments for breast cancer by identifying new heritable risk factors. As an expert in epigenetics, she and her team have discovered an important new type of risk factor for breast cancer – DNA methylation.

DNA methylation can cause detrimental changes to the DNA leading to abnormal cell behaviour. These changes can be detected by a simple blood test.

This project will incorporate these new risk factors into the leading risk prediction model for breast cancer around the world – with the target of improving prevention. It will also open up new opportunities for developing a wide range of epigenetic treatments for breast cancer in the future.

Thanks to you and your generosity, world-class research like this is possible – we can’t do it without you!

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

NBCF_Grid_9Percent_600x600

55 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day this year. That’s over 20,000 people. Over the past 27 years, the five-year survival rate has increased from 76% to 91% and rising, but more than 3,000 people will still die from the disease in 2021.

This Breast Cancer Awareness month, we are reflecting on the progress in research that has been made and are driven by the gap to Zero Deaths becoming ever-closer. But about 9% of Australians still don’t make it to the five-year mark. The only way we can get there is by understanding the disease’s origin, the way it grows and spreads and the risks. And the way to get there is through research.

Since 1994, it's estimated that over 50,000 people have survived to their five-year milestone thanks mainly to advances in research. So, we must keep going. Because each world-class research project you help to fund gets us one step closer towards our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer. Thank you!

“Your support is not only saving lives, but also contributing to a hardworking, passionate community who are continually making strides towards zero deaths from breast cancer. We feel extremely proud to be working alongside the NBCF and taking part in their journey.”

- Oppenheimer, NBCF Corporate Partner

As an NBCF corporate partner, Oppenheimer has committed to raising $15,000 this year to help fund lifesaving breast cancer research. The global distributor has carefully curated an exclusive Pink Bliss product range to appeal to its high-profile retail partners, customers and the NBCF community – featuring practical yet stylish everyday items that make life easier. Oppenheimer will donate 5% from the Pink Bliss Range and has asked its strong retail partners, like Amazon, to match this donation.

The team at Oppenheimer says that NBCF serves as a symbol of strength to them – a promise of a better tomorrow for people impacted by breast cancer. And that’s why the entire team is extremely proud to be working with us. Their main goal is to raise as much awareness as they can through their platforms – and work together with customers to raise much needed funds, so we can focus on achieving Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

To amplify NBCF’s visibility within the community and give the Pink Bliss range full exposure, Oppenheimer has also secured a segment on TVSN in October and December to encourage engaged viewers embrace the cause and get a chance to support it through purchasing products from the range.

Thank you to Oppenheimer and their partners for their hard work and support. With them by our side, tomorrow will be better for all Australians with breast cancer.
