Over the last 2 years NBCF has embarked on an ambitious program of strategy development. We have developed new Corporate, Research, Fundraising, People & Culture, Brand and Marketing strategies which are all in various stages of implementation.
These strategies challenge us to take an enterprise-wide approach across all areas. We are moving from a campaign-focused to an audience-focused approach, while ensuring teams across NBCF align and connect in planning, implementation and optimisation. To support these significant shifts, we need to ensure that our data is central, co-ordinated and shared, to ensure data-driven planning and performance management across the organisation.
The final strategy to be delivered will be the Digital Strategy which will be informed by the implementation needs of the other strategies. It will deliver the technology, tools, integrations and processes to allow the efficient and effective delivery of our future customer-centric and data driven initiatives.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
This role provides a unique opportunity to work at the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) within the Digital Technology team.
The Head of Data and Insights is a leadership role dedicated to advancing the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s ability to harness data for strategic decision-making and operational effectiveness. This position is responsible for establishing a strong data strategy and architecture, delivering a fit-for-purpose data platform, a governance framework, ensuring compliance with data security protocols and fostering a culture of analytical excellence. As a key strategic partner to various departments, this role involves shaping the organisation’s approach to data management, leveraging insights to enhance performance, and driving continuous improvement in fundraising and digital initiatives. The Head of Data and Insights will enable the
data that empowers NBCF teams to meet the objectives of our new strategies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Strategy and Architecture:
- Work closely with the Director of Digital Technology, Head of Customer of Technology, IT Manager and teams across the organisation to develop and implement a comprehensive digital strategy for NBCF that is aligned with our other strategies and our long term vision.
- As part of the digital strategy development and implementation take ownership of a data strategy that supports its goals. The data strategy will define NBCF’s approach to data, from governance and security, storage, collection, technology choices and the integration of multiple data sources into a single source of truth.
- Use your experience of data models and best practice to own and evolve NBCF’s data architecture.
- Lead the transition towards a centralised and democratised single view of our customer that is composed of integrated data from all of our various systems and is fit for purpose for fundraising and marketing activation.
Data Infrastructure and Technology:
- Work with internal stakeholders to identify business requirements, conduct research, evaluate and recommend the adoption of fit-for-purpose data platforms and tools.
- An initial project is likely to be the evaluation and implementation of new CRM and enterprise Finance systems. You will, with the Director of Digital Technology, Head of Customer of Technology, IT Manager and teams across the organisation, work to evaluate, select and implement these platforms and ensure that the organisation has the skills to fully leverage their capability.
- Use your experience and in-depth knowledge of industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure the chosen technologies meet the needs of the organisation now and into the future.
- Own and evolve the design and implementation of these platforms and tools to enhance data management, business processes, analytics and business intelligence capabilities and ensure that they are optimised for integration, automation, scale, agility and AI.
- Establish fit for purpose data integrations between these platforms with a focus on real time, automated and secure data transfers to provide a single customer view.
Governance:
- Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive data governance frameworks that ensure data quality, security and compliance with Australian Privacy Law and ACNC governance standards.
- Define and enforce data governance standards, procedures, and policies that encompass data stewardship, ownership, access rights, and ethical AI usage across all organizational functions.
- Take ownership of data lifecycle management from collection through retention and disposal, working closely with the IT Manager to ensure alignment with cybersecurity requirements and regulatory compliance.
Analytics / Insights:
- Oversee the collection, processing, and analysis of supporter information, ensuring quality data is captured and utilised
- Provide and manage the platforms and tools that deliver supporter insights, fundraising analytics and campaign performance dashboards to drive strategic decision-making.
- Develop standardised and templated reports and dashboards to provide the organisation with data that enhances audience insights and segmentation, facilitates the development and monitoring of supporter journeys, maximises donor lifetime value and improves fundraising effectiveness.
- Act as a centre of excellence supporting teams in customising and utilising reports to drive maximum business value.
- Leverage data analytics and predictive models to strengthen donor engagement strategies, improve retention rates, and maximise fundraising success.
- Provide the data and insights that allow the identification of opportunities to optimise and automate business processes using fit-for-purpose solutions.
AI Enablement:
- Prepare and shape NBCF’s data for AI/ML use cases – predictive donor modelling, personalisation, automated supporter engagement.
- Work with external partners and platforms to deploy AI-driven insights into operational systems.
Stakeholder engagement / leadership:
- Build and mentor a small high-performing data and insights team.
- Foster a culture of ongoing learning and professional development within the team, ensuring they acquire new skills and expertise to enhance stakeholder support.
- Champion a data-driven culture across the organisation, ensuring teams have access to the insights they need to excel.
- Cultivate strong partnerships across teams and stakeholders to enhance data understanding, foster collaboration, and generate actionable insights that support strategic planning and informed decision-making.
- Offer specialised expertise in data systems, enabling teams to deliver personalised outreach.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES
Experience and Knowledge:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant business discipline (e.g. analytics, insights, computer science, data management, statistics).
- Demonstrated experience in leading a data-driven transformation initiative.
- Demonstrated experience leading, motivating and managing a team of data executives and data analysts to deliver business-focused data services and solutions.
- Solid knowledge in fundraising, with a focus on revenue optimisation through data-driven insights and the cultivation of exceptional donor experiences.
- Experience with managing cloud systems (Azure preferred), enterprise data warehouse, SQL database experience.
- Extensive knowledge of fundraising CRM systems, automation platforms, CDP, marketing platforms and finance system, and the effective integration among the systems.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to simplify complex business processes into clear and actionable system functions.
- Proven experience in overseeing data governance, ensuring data security, and conducting comprehensive risk assessments.
- Ability to build strong relationship with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders Demonstrated ability to manage and negotiate contracts with external stakeholders and suppliers within operational budgets.
- Understanding the life-saving impact of breast cancer research is a valuable asset.
