Accelerating Gender Equality in Research with NBCF Executive Director, Research Dr Julie Ince-Demetriou
International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrates women's equality globally. This year's theme, 'Accelerate Action,' emphasises the urgent need for progress.
With over 20 years of experience in clinical research and drug development in industry, Julie shares her own personal reflections and advice for women on gender equality.
1. What does 'Accelerate Action' mean to you in your work?
“Accelerating gender equality requires moving from intention to measurable change. In research, this means funding the most promising ideas and empowering the right people, regardless of gender. Despite progress, systemic barriers like institutional structures, cultural expectations, biases, and workplace policies continue to hold women back. As a funder of world-class breast cancer research, NBCF can drive change through funding policies, diverse leadership initiatives, and advocacy. Continued progress demands deliberate steps to remove barriers and create lasting equality in research.”
2. How can we encourage more women to join the research field?
“As a Mum of two daughters, this is personal to me. Encouraging more women to join the research field starts with broadening the conversation about what a career in research can look like. Visibility and diverse role models are key. We must ensure young girls & women are aware of career opportunities early on. Research isn’t limited to academia or being a laboratory-based scientist. It spans clinical research, industry, policy, public health, and beyond. My own career path reflects this diversity. I chose to pursue clinical research in the pharmaceutical industry, where I had the opportunity to contribute to advancing new treatments and bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world impact. That experience ultimately led me to my current role at NBCF, where I now focus on driving investment into world-class breast cancer research and supporting the best and brightest researchers to deliver impact.”
3. What role does NBCF play in promoting gender equality?
“To ensure gender equality, NBCF recognises that breast cancer research must reflect the community it serves. We promote gender equality by implementing non-discriminatory workplace policies and ensuring our funding streams are accessible and supportive of women at all career stages. This includes accommodating career interruptions and allowance for balancing work and family commitments. Additionally, we must continue to advocate for systemic changes and maintain open dialogue to address the challenges women face. Keeping dialogue open and responsive to the challenges women face is crucial.
NBCF also has a platform to recognise and celebrate the amazing female researchers we fund, making their roles visible and inspiring future generations of young women to consider careers in research. We strive to level the playing field, so the best ideas, regardless of gender, receive the support they need to make an impact!”
4. How can we support women who are just starting their careers in research?
“This requires a multi-faceted approach that removes barriers, provides guidance and creates opportunities for growth. Mentorship, sponsorship, and networking are key. Learning from those who have navigated similar paths and challenges is invaluable. Developing programs and offering early career researchers access to experienced mentors can change career trajectories.
Education and training initiatives are also important, not just in developing research expertise but in equipping women with leadership skills, and career navigation strategies.
Beyond formal programs and initiatives, allies, both men and women, play a crucial role in advocating for gender equality and supporting women in their career progression.”
5. What are some small actions everyone can take to help accelerate gender equality?
“Accelerating gender equality requires everyday action. Consistent, tangible steps drive real change.
Engage young girls and women early into what it means to have a career in STEMM and inspire them with the impact they could have.
Amplify women’s voices, acknowledging their contributions and achievements, while openly bringing persistent challenges to the forefront to address.
Champion women for leadership positions and diverse opportunities, and call out bias, both in everyday conversations and formal decision making.
Continue to dismantle systemic barriers and normalise work-life balance with policies, irrespective of gender.
Having navigated a research career in industry, strong mentors, supportive colleagues, and inclusive workplace policies enable all to thrive.”
6. What is one thing you hope to see change for women in research in the next five years?
“I would like to see a research ecosystem where gender is no longer a barrier, with opportunities based on talent, merit and no bias. True success means no longer needing to discuss gender inequality, only excellence in research. My wish is that when my daughters enter the workforce and other young women like them, gender is never a factor in the opportunities available to them. Their choices and success will only be determined by their ambition, talent and hard work.
Reflecting on my own 25-year career, I have seen positive and accelerated change, and that certainly gives me hope for the future.”
Together, we can create opportunities and pave the way for future generations.
CELEBRATING 27 YEARS OF SUPPORT AND RESEARCH
The 2025 Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic marks 27 years of dedication to breast cancer research, raising and incredible $46.1 million.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and the Mother’s Day Classic (MDC) have a long-standing partnership aimed at funding vital breast cancer research. This collaboration has been pivotal in driving progress and innovation in the fight against breast cancer.
Sophie, a participant in this years’ event shares her story:
“I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in May 2023. At the time I was a seemingly healthy, busy mum of two young boys. The last year has been an emotional and physically taxing rollercoaster ride but feeling lucky the treatment has worked. I will finish treatment 3 days before this year’s MDC and will proudly be walking with my family on 11 May, the day I was diagnosed a year earlier. While I am eager to move forward, I will never forget the kindness our family was shown and now want to do what I can to give back”
This year on Sunday, May 11, 2025, walk or run on Mother’s Day to honour and support world-class breast and ovarian cancer research. We extend our deepest gratitude to all our fundraisers. Derek discovered that he carries a mutation in the BRCA 2 gene, inherited through his maternal lineage. He believes that knowledge is power and encouraged his children to have genetic testing, so that they could make informed decisions about their health and that of their own children.
Derek’s two daughters, Robyn and Linda found they also inherited the BRCA 2 gene and were able to take the best path for them, supported by medical knowledge. Both are relieved to know that world-class breast cancer research has increased their chances of them living long and healthy lives.
Derek has supported National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) philanthropically since 2014.
“NBCF relies on donations and that’s how my family and I can help in the pursuit of knowledge that will save lives, like it has in our family. Philanthropy allows you to make a positive impact during your lifetime to a cause that is important to you, and close to your heart. By supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) your impact goes beyond funding breast cancer research. When you give, you inspire others to do the same.”
Imagine a world where no one dies from breast cancer. Together we can create hope and a world where we are contributing to a better understanding of breast cancer.
“Supporting breast cancer medical research gives us the answers. It’s worth asking the questions.” – Derek, NBCF Supporter
Passionate sportwear brand Mizuno have been making an active impact on breast cancer outcomes since 2020. Their ongoing commitment towards health and well-being has led them to raise over $60,000 for NBCF, funding critical breast cancer research.
Each October for the last five years, Mizuno has released special limited-edition Project Zero running shoes, with a portion of each sale going back to NBCF. Their most recent Wave Inspire 20 Project Zero model launched in October 2024 and remains available in stores and online until 31 March 2025.
Beyond their public-facing campaigns, Mizuno also hosts a Pink Ribbon Breakfast for their staff each year to celebrate their impact and provide an update on what their support means for NBCF. The team participates in various fun activities and giveaways, and they are encouraged to wear pink to help raise awareness.
Every year over 3,300 people in Australia will die from breast cancer. That’s 9 people a day dying from the disease. The ongoing and passionate support from partners such as Mizuno enables NBCF to fund critical research – research that will ultimately save lives.
A huge thank you to Mizuno and their team for their ongoing commitment and support.
