NBCF’s goal is to maximise the amount of funds that we can make available for research, and the impact of that research. Experience has shown us this cannot be done by volunteers alone, although we rely heavily on a large network of volunteers in the research and wider Australian communities. We therefore need infrastructure and experienced staff to provide necessary skill, and governance to achieve our goal. It’s important to note however that these costs incurred are still contributing to our overall ability to achieve our goal.
With this in mind, NBCF’s administrational costs include staff costs, rent, marketing, IT and any other operational costs including amortisation. In the last financial year 2019 the relative cost of administration was 23.6%.
While NBCF is proud of its cautious use of funds for administration we believe this is an inadequate measure of the organisation. A true measure of the importance of each donation comes from consideration of the organisation’s impact in the community and on the achievements towards the overall mission and objectives.
As you know, NBCF seeks to change outcomes for people impacted by breast cancer and reduces deaths from the disease. It will achieve this through investment in outstanding Australian cancer research. Since our inception in 1994, we have seen the survival rate of breast cancer in Australia increase from 76% to 92%. This is proof that investment in world-class breast cancer research is making a positive impact. These remarkable results are confounded by rising numbers of new cases of breast cancer each year. Unfortunately, today’s reality is that breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in Australia, causing over 8 deaths every day.
In the interest of monitoring further progress, NBCF utilises a leading international research outcome and impact tracking tool to monitor the short, medium and long-term outcomes of research, to demonstrate the quality of NBCF’s research portfolio.
Identifying, funding and championing world-class research through our rigorous grants scheme process.
The significant results generated by NBCF-funded research can then be used to leverage additional funding (from NBCF or other funding sources) to continue their important work. On average, NBCF projects are able to secure $3.40 of funding to progress their work towards Zero Deaths.
NBCF also identifies new and effective models of funding and ensuring that we don't stand alone but work collaboratively and creatively, ensuring we are able to create further leverage our donor dollars.
NBCF ensures that any leveraged funding is for additional research, expanding or building on the work funded by NBCF through processes where we ensure no funding overlap.
This means that even after accounting for administration costs, every dollar donated results in over $3 being unlocked for research.
Ultimately, we fund highly effective breast cancer research projects in Australia, which means they can build on their success to secure further funding in their journey towards achieving the ultimate outcomes of improved prevention, detection, treatment and better quality of life for breast cancer patients.
