BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, every one of us has the power to ignite and create extraordinary change. For 30 years, with the support of people like you, we’ve been empowering people to make an extraordinary difference by supporting world-class breast cancer research that improves treatment outcomes and ends deaths from this disease.

Our shared story belongs to all of us. We are all empowered to make a difference for those facing breast cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides an opportunity for all of us to not only raise awareness for the disease but to continue to raise vital funds for breast cancer research.

Our Power of Pink Giving Day takes place on October 17, where every donation will be matched by our wonderful matching partners, to empower world-class breast cancer research and help us move one step closer to a future with Zero Deaths from breast cancer. Last year, almost 2,000 supporters, just like you raised a total of $220,000 on Power of Pink Giving Day showing extraordinary commitment to raise vital funds for world-class breast cancer research. Thank you for your incredible support!

Together, this Breast Cancer Awareness Month we can take another step closer to our shared vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

EXAMINING TRIPLE NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER CELLS

Thanks to your unwavering support, National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF)-funded researcher, Associate Professor Joy Wolfram and her team, are investigating how Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) cells avoid detection and destruction by the immune system, allowing cancer cells to survive and spread to other parts of the body.

TNBC is an aggressive form of breast cancer, with the highest rate of recurrence, limited treatment options and overall poor survival outcomes compared to other types of breast cancer. TNBC accounts for up to 15% of all breast cancer cases and in Australia this equates to around 3,000 new cases every year.

TNBC cells release extracellular vesicles that help the cells avoid detection and destruction by the immune system. Associate Professor Wolfram and her team are investigating how these extracellular vesicles prevent immune cells from finding and destroying cancer cells. This study will allow the team to gain a better understanding of the interactions and cell-to-cell communication between TNBC and immune cells.

Currently, the most common therapies for TNBC are chemotherapies, which have toxic side effects, and immune therapies which, currently, only benefit small numbers of people. This study will allow Associate Professor Wolfram and her team to understand the aggressive features of TNBC cells which is critical for treating TNBC more effectively and reducing deaths from the disease.

Without the generosity of people like you, research studies like this one conducted by Associate Professor Wolfram and her team would not be possible. Thank you for helping us move closer to our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

SWIM FOR BREAST CANCER CHALLENGE

Photo of Jackson

We are thrilled to announce that registrations are now OPEN for our brand-new Swim for Breast Cancer 2024 challenge!

Register for free and swim 9km this November to support the nine people in Australia that die from breast cancer every day.

Meet Jackson, a passionate swimmer and extraordinary NBCF fundraiser. In 2021, Jackson’s mother was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma, a type of breast cancer that begins in the milk-producing glands. During this challenging time, Jackson decided to support his mum by raising funds for breast cancer research.

“For me, swimming has always been a source of relief during tough times, so I wanted to use it as a medium for change,” said Jackson.

Join the movement and commit to swimming 9km this November. Every lap swum, and every dollar raised will help fund world-class breast cancer research! When you receive your first donation, we’ll send you a FREE pink swim cap from our NBCF partner, Vorgee.

Breast cancer diagnoses are on the rise, with more than 20,000 people in Australia expected to be diagnosed this year. That’s why we need YOU to make a splash to save lives by joining NBCF's Swim for Breast Cancer!

Join Jackson and make a difference this November!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Thank you

We love hearing from our amazing donors and wanted to share this message of support with you all.

I was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer during a routine check-up. I can’t stop thinking about the researchers toiling away years before I received my diagnosis, developing new therapies that saved my life now. I donate to give hope to the people who will find themselves in my position in the future.
