JOB TITLE: Science Communications Specialist

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Science Communications Specialist plays a key role in translating complex breast cancer research into clear, engaging, and scientifically accurate content. This content supports the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s (NBCF) brand awareness activity, fundraising initiatives, and donor engagement, reinforcing NBCF’s position as one of Australia’s most trusted charities and drives progress towards our vision of Zero deaths from breast cancer.
The Science Communications Specialist is a newly created role that will work in the marketing team and work closely with the research team. We are searching for a talented and passionate scientific (or medical) content writer to join us. You will be responsible for creating high quality, engaging content that resonates with our audiences.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Content Development & Translation:
- Simplify complex research projects into accessible content for diverse audiences at different stages of the customer journey, including the public, donors, and corporate partners.
- Create compelling materials for fundraising campaigns, donor proposals, media releases, website content, speeches, digital and printed newsletters, social media, SEO/SEM, and presentations.
- Tailor messaging for different audience segments and personas, from first-time supporters to major donors and bequest givers.
- Provide accessible training materials (eg one pagers, cheat sheets) for NBCF staff by translating complex research
- Ensure all research-related content is engaging, scientifically accurate, and aligned with NBCF’s brand
Proactive Research Communications:
- Develop regular research updates in line with NBCF’s funding objectives and content pillars.
- Contribute to awareness campaigns that showcase the impact of NBCF-funded research.
- Identify creative ways to communicate research impact across multiple platforms and campaigns.
- Proactively identify relevant research content that aligns with NBCF’s content strategy, such as quarterly content themes
Stakeholder Collaboration & Engagement:
- Work closely with the Research team to understand NBCF’s research portfolio and communicate key insights effectively
- Work closely with all Fundraising teams to identify and provide relevant content to support a wide variety of Fundraising campaign objectives
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- A degree in a science-related field is required; postgraduate qualifications in health communication or a related area are highly desirable.
- Strong background in science communication or medical writing, with the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into lay language.
- Excellent understanding of medical and research terminology.
- Exceptional written communication skills with a proven ability to craft engaging content for various channels and audiences.
- Experience in fundraising or working in a fundraising-adjacent industry is highly desirable.
- A collaborative and creative thinker who can engage with multiple teams to develop compelling research narratives for different audiences.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to forward-plan content, including experience in content strategy development.
- Strong storytelling ability to make research relatable and impactful
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
