Since the inception of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) in 1994, the death rate from breast cancer in Australia has reduced by over 40%, in large part due to research.
We’ve seen remarkable results, but the job’s not done yet. Some people are still diagnosed late. Recurrence can occur years, even decades, after treatment. And for people living with incurable and life-limiting metastatic (stage 4) breast cancer, treatment options remain limited.
Co-funded by NBCF and the Mother’s Day Classic Foundation, Professor Belinda Parker and her team are investigating new ways to strengthen the immune system to attack metastatic breast cancer. This research has the potential to unlock more effective immunotherapies that could lead to longer-lasting disease control and extended survival, allowing more lives to be saved and more stories to be finished.

ABOUT BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) takes place every October. The aim of BCAM is to shine a light on the devastating impact breast cancer has on thousands of people in Australia.
Every day, 56 people in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer – and every year, over 3,300 people (including 40 men) will die from this disease. That’s someone’s mother, father, sibling, friend or family member whose life has been tragically cut short.
We rely on generous donations from the Australian community to fund world-class breast cancer research. Thanks to people like you, we can invest in research aimed at preventing breast cancer, detecting it earlier, stopping its progression and recurrence, and finding better ways to treat metastatic and hard-to-treat breast cancer.
