Judith and Hilda shared a connection that was extraordinary from the very beginning. Born on 29 February 1936, the twin sisters marked 20 leap‑year birthdays together – a rare rhythm that mirrored the closeness of their lives. That bond extended far beyond family, shaping decades of service to their community and to those touched by breast cancer.

For nearly 20 years, Judith and Hilda volunteered with the Port Macquarie Pink Ladies, a group dedicated to supporting patients and bringing comfort to those navigating difficult journeys. Week after week, the sisters gave four hours of their time, offering care and kindness with unwavering commitment. Their service was not only generous, it was steadfast and a quiet promise kept over decades.
Judith and Hilda also worked side by side in the Medical Records Department at Port Macquarie Base Hospital for nine years, bringing the same warmth and reliability to their professional roles that they shared in their volunteer work. When Hilda passed away in 2019, Judith continued her service at Port Macquarie Community Health, carrying forward the spirit of their shared mission with grace and determination.
Judith’s generosity extended beyond her time. She was a donor during her lifetime and in a final act of kindness, included a gift in her Will to the the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) – ensuring her impact would continue for years to come. In 2024, Judith celebrated her 22nd leap-year birthday – a milestone that spoke to a life lived fully and with purpose. Later that year, in October, she too passed away, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and community care that will not be forgotten.
Judith and Hilda’s story is a reminder that the heart of breast cancer research is not only in laboratories and clinics, but also in the hands of those who give their time, energy and love to support others.
Their dedication reflects the very best of what it means to serve – and their memory continues to inspire all who believe in a future of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.
