FY2026/27 Federal Budget – The National Breast Cancer Foundation Statement

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) welcomes the Australian Government’s continued commitment to health and medical research funding through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), recognising its critical role in strengthening Australia’s health and medical research system.

Sustained public investment in medical research provides certainty and momentum for researchers, supporting innovation, attracting world-class expertise and accelerating the translation of discoveries into real world health outcomes for Australians.

Dr Cleola Anderiesz, CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, said long-term, investment is essential to improving health outcomes and driving progress in complex diseases.

“Medical research relies on stable, longterm funding to turn promising ideas into improved outcomes and lives saved. Government investment through schemes such as the MRFF, alongside philanthropic and charitable support, strengthens Australia’s medical research system that delivers lasting health and societal impacts for all Australians.”

Australia’s health and medical research success has been built on bold innovation and collaboration across funders, universities, research institutes, health services, industry and the community. Continued support for a thriving health and medical research ecosystem enables researchers to tackle complex challenges and translate new knowledge into better patient outcomes.

“For breast cancer research in Australia, sustained research remains essential to improving survival rates and bringing us closer to the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.”

NBCF looks forward to continued collaboration across the research sector to maximise the impact of medical research investment and ensure Australia remains a global leader in health and medical innovation.
