Following the loss of a loved one to breast cancer, Laura Ovens Vice President of the Kissing Point Softball Club decided something needed to be done to help find a cure for breast cancer. Combining her passion for softball with a desire to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Laura came up with the concept of “Strike Out Breast Cancer”. The event brought together people from different softball clubs for one day, united as one team to work towards a better future where breast cancer has been “struck” out!
Each year there are softball competitions, pink fancy dress and all sorts of fun and games. The 2010 event was also broadcast live on the Today Show and proved extremely popular with all the community, not just softball enthusiasts! Everyone involved gave 110% and the event raised an extraordinary $49,000 for breast cancer research.
Laura’s favourite memory of the day was the “the sea of pink, with softball teams all across the North Shore District playing in pink, for one day, as one team for one cure.” Laura is hoping that this year’s event will be even bigger and better and we wish her every success and massive thanks for all her previous work!
