Targeting nutrient uptake to ‘starve’ breast cancer

Start Year: 2012

Early Career Fellowship

Dr Holst is looking at protein pumps, which control the amount of nutrients absorbed by cancer cells. Research has shown that two of these protein pumps are increased in breast cancer and can increase nutrient availability, enhancing growth of the cancer. The protein pumps are present on the surface of cells, making them excellent candidates for drug targeting.
